BioSPOILERS FOR RUNAWAYS--- READ AT YOUR OWN RISK
Gertrude Yorkes is an ordinary 16 year old girl. She grew up in an affluent home and was the only child of Stacey and Dale Yorkes, Jewish antiques dealers from California. Gert is intelligent, quick witted and has a sharp, sarcastic tongue. She is an agnostic and a socialist, although her parents refused to let her join the socialist club. Her interests include film and playing the drums. At one time she planned on becoming a Senator when she grew up. Oh, and she also has a pet dinosaur with which she shares a telepathic link.
Let's backtrack a little, shall we? Gert's parents where not everything they appeared to be, to the outside world and to Gert herself. They were in fact time travellers from the 87th century who got stuck in present day California when Dale crashed their time travelling machine. They were quickly called to become part of an evil organisation, The Pride, whose one goal was to destroy all of humanity.
When Gert discovered what her parents did in their spare time, she and the children of the other members of The Pride ran away from home and vowed to fight evil with weapons and powers stolen from their parents. The 'weapons' included the genetically-engineered deinonychus from the 87th century. Gert’s interest in old films led her to name the dinosaur Old Lace and in rejection of everything her parents had given her, she took the code name Arsenic- a reference to the 40’s film Arsenic and Old Lace.
Since finding out her parents are actually murderous criminals, Gert has a deep distrust of adults, especially adults in power. And after a vicious betrayal by someone she considered a leader and a friend, she now finds it difficult to trust her peers as well.
After destroying The Pride, Gert and her fellow runaways were placed in care by a well meaning Captain America and Gert was put into a boarding school. But after living on their own for so long, the teens couldn’t cope with living under the thumb of adults and ran away once more. They are now on the run from the authorities and are once again fighting the evil forces that threaten California. In a perfect world, Gert would be a pacifist but the extreme circumstances she has faced have forced her to take an active role in fighting the good fight.
Gert comes to the bar from between issues 13 and 14 of Runaways series 2.
Appearance-wise, Gert is slightly shorter than average and a few pounds overweight. She wears glasses and dies her hair purple.
